Pattern Imprinted Concrete Driveway Cost: A Complete UK Guide

A pattern imprinted concrete driveway costs £90 to £140 per m² to install and the average cost for most homeowners will be between £95 and £130 per m². A standard 50m² two-car driveway will cost you around £4,750 to £6,500 for the whole job.

Pattern imprinted concrete which is also known as stamped concrete is designed to look like block paving, natural stone or brick without using individual blocks. The pattern is pressed directly into freshly laid concrete before the colouring and sealing process starts. If you want a decorative finish but don't want to pay premium prices, this type is the best choice for you. If you are looking for plain, brushed or coloured concrete instead, see our standard concrete cost guide.

Driveway size Typical cost
20m² (single car) £1,900 to £2,600
50m² (two-car driveway) £4,750 to £6,500
100m² (large or multi-car driveway) £9,500 to £13,000

The prices above include everything from excavation and a proper sub-base to reinforcement where needed, the concrete pour, stamping the pattern and finally colouring and sealing. Larger driveways can be slightly cheaper per square metre because the setup costs are spread across a bigger area.

You will have to pay more if you are living in either London or the South East. The pattern and colour you choose can also make a difference to the final price. If the quote you get is outside the £90 to £140 per m² range, you should check exactly what's included in it before deciding whether it's good value.

This is worth paying attention to because it's one of the biggest warning signs. A properly installed pattern imprinted concrete driveway should be laid on at least 100mm of concrete. If you are getting quotes between £40 and £60 per m² from contractors then there is a good chance that corners are being cut meaning that the installer is either laying down a thinner concrete slab or installing a sub-base that is too shallow or poorly prepared.

A low quote itself doesn't mean that something is wrong but a pattern imprinted driveway has a minimum cost to build properly so if the price is far below that, you should ask the installer where the savings are being made before you go ahead.

Labour. Around £45 to £65 per m² of the total cost of project goes on labour. The pattern has to be stamped into the concrete by the installer at exactly the right time. If it's too wet, the pattern won't hold and if it's too hard, it won't stamp properly. Getting that timing right takes proper skill and experience.

Pattern and design. Standard patterns cost about the same but the price starts to climb up when you want to add borders, different colours or decorative sections to your driveway.

Colour. Plain grey is the cheapest option and if you want colour mixed right through the concrete instead of just on the surface, you will need to pay more.

Thickness and reinforcement. A thickness of concrete on your driveway should be at least 100mm. Some driveways will also need steel mesh reinforcement if heavy vehicles park on them.

Removing an old driveway. Remove your existing driveway and clearing it away adds to the final cost before the new one can be laid. The more material that has to be removed, the more you'll pay.

Access. If machinery or a concrete lorry can't reach your driveway then more work has to be done by hand which means that labour costs will increase.

Drainage. Pattern imprinted concrete doesn't let water soak through. If rainwater cannot drain into your lawn or border, you will need to create an extra drainage system to meet the rules.

If you are comparing pattern imprinted concrete with plain concrete or another driveway material, you should read our main driveway cost guide and standard concrete cost guide.

A pattern imprinted concrete driveway takes 5 to 7 days to install. The process includes excavation, installing the sub-base, then concrete pour, stamping the pattern and finally sealing the surface. Once it's finished, leave the driveway for at least 7 days before parking a car on it so the concrete and sealer have time to harden properly.

This is not a DIY job. The pattern has to be pressed into the concrete at exactly the right moment before it starts to set. Too early or too late and the finish can be spoiled. Fixing mistakes is difficult so you should just choose an installer with experience of pattern imprinted concrete rather than a contractor who only pours standard concrete.

Pros

  • Premium look at a lower cost than block paving or natural stone, since it's a decorative surface treatment on a standard concrete base
  • Wide range of patterns and colours to mimic brick, cobbles, natural stone or other finishes
  • Durable and low maintenance once properly sealed, similar to plain concrete's practical strengths
  • No joints for weeds, unlike genuine block paving
  • Good kerb appeal, often cited as one of the more visually striking driveway options for the price

Cons

  • Higher cost than plain concrete for the decorative finish, roughly £30 to £50 more per m²
  • Longer curing time than plain concrete before it can take vehicle weight
  • Not permeable, so drainage and planning permission need the same consideration as tarmac or standard concrete
  • Pattern edges can wear over time, particularly in high traffic areas, more visibly than a plain concrete surface would show wear
  • Genuinely not a DIY job, unlike some other driveway materials where a confident homeowner has a realistic shot at it

A well-installed pattern imprinted concrete driveway will last around 20 to 30 years. This lifespan is a little less than a plain concrete driveway because the textured surface and pattern wears down faster over time.

Resealing helps keep the driveway looking its best. It protects the colour, helps prevent stains and adds another layer of protection against small surface cracks. The cost of resealing comes in at £4 to £8 per m² and you have to do it every 2 to 5 years. If you leave your driveway too long without sealing, the colour will start to fade and the surface will start to stain or develop small cracks around the pattern.

Small cracks on your driveway can usually be repaired but if the sub-base has failed and parts of the driveway are sinking, replacing the damaged area of the driveway is the better option. The biggest challenge while repairing is matching the existing pattern and colour.

Small repairs, such as filling a crack or touching up faded colour can cost £100 to £300.

Larger repairs cost more, especially if the pattern has to be recreated to match the rest of the driveway.

If a bigger section needs replacing, the cost can be close to a new installation because it's difficult to blend new concrete into an older surface.

If the driveway has cracks across several areas or parts have started to sink, ask the installer to inspect the sub-base first because repairing only the surface would not fix the problem.

Pattern imprinted concrete costs more than plain concrete and tarmac but it is similar in price to resin and premium block paving. It gives you the look of brick, stone or cobbles without having to lay individual blocks. Resin material comes in different colour options and can handle drainage better and block paving is easier to repair if one area gets damaged.

Pattern imprinted concrete is a good choice if you want a decorative driveway without the cost of real block paving.

What thickness of concrete is included? A pattern imprinted driveway should be built with at least 100mm of concrete. If the quote doesn't mention the thickness, ask the contractor before you agree to the work.

Is the base concrete reinforced? Reinforcement is very important as it helps to reduce the risk of cracking, especially if the driveway will be used by heavier vehicles.

What sealer is being used, and is resealing included in the price? Ask which sealer will be used and whether the price mentioned in the quote includes the first coat. Also ask the installer how often it will need resealing.

How is drainage being handled? Since pattern imprinted concrete isn't permeable, ask whether the driveway falls to a soakaway or border as required.

What's the workmanship guarantee? Ask for a written guarantee that covers problems such as cracking, sinking and colour fading. A reputable installer should have no problem providing one.

Pattern imprinted concrete driveways typically cost £60–£120 per m² fully installed. Prices depend on pattern complexity, number of colours, site access, ground condition and regional labour rates.
A well-installed pattern imprinted concrete driveway lasts 25–30+ years. Lifespan depends on sub-base quality, proper installation and regular resealing every 3–5 years.
For homeowners wanting a decorative, weed-free surface that mimics premium materials, pattern imprinted concrete offers strong value. It is more expensive than standard concrete but cheaper than authentic block paving or natural stone.
You don't need planning permission if the surface is permeable or drains to a lawn/soakaway. Non-permeable surfaces over 5m² draining to the road require permission. Some installers offer permeable options.
Most pattern imprinted concrete driveways are installed in 5–7 working days, depending on size, ground conditions, weather and pattern complexity.
